Beluga Whales

Between mid-June to mid-September, more than 5,000 gather in the area of the coastline of Hudson Bay.  It is home to the world’s largest population of Beluga Whales.

Belugas are majestic sociable creatures that are well adapted to their arctic and subarctic environment. Recognized by their broad, rounded head and a large forehead, they have broad paddle-like flippers, notched tails, a five-inch-thick layer of blubber, and a tough dorsal ridge that helps them travel through the icy sea waters at great speeds.

FUN FACTS:

Their colour is their camouflage and hides them from predators – they can swim up to 15 minutes under water – they are also known as tooth whales and canaries of the sea and. . .  they can swim backwards.   Who knew?
